8th Grade Requirements

The expectation is that our 8th-grade students continuously demonstrate respect and act responsibly as school leaders.  A letter detailing all of the requirements for our 8th-grade students to participate in closing activities will be sent home to parents.

The following are the criteria by which a student may be excluded from closing exercises and end-of-year activities:

The ultimate goal for the students of T.K. Finletter Academics Plus is to prepare them for College Graduation. Moving forward, the end-of-year exercise will be referred to as “Promotion.”

In order to participate in the Promotion Exercises, the following are required:

Academic Effort
Outstanding Attendance
School Pride
The following infractions may result in exclusion from 8th Grade Activities and the Promotion Exercises:

Lower than a 65 (D) in any major subject
Excessive Absences/Latenesses (arriving at or after 8:30 AM)
2 Level II Infractions (suspendable offenses as per the SDP Code of Conduct)
Academic Effort

Students will actively participate in their education. They are expected to be resilient (not give up) and resourceful (do whatever it takes) to achieve.

If a student is failing at the end of the first marking period the following steps will be taken:

A RTII plan will be created and intervention will be assigned
Parental contact will be made to address issues that are barriers to success.
Students will be placed in an intervention group and monitored weekly to address areas of concern.
Students will be required to receive daily check-ins with an assigned member of school staff to address academic concerns.
Attendance/Lateness

Good attendance is a key factor in academic success. Students are expected to be in school and on time every day.

After the 3rd occurrence of an absence or lateness, a mandatory conference to establish an attendance contract will be established with the student/parent. (Failure to sign and adhere to the attendance contract is an automatic exclusion from promotion exercises.)  This is a proactive step to be taken by the school, student, and parent to improve attendance and prevent exclusion from 8th Grade Activities and Promotion. Improved attendance and decreased latenesses will be a consideration when determining a student’s eligibility to participate in activities and promotion. Students violating the attendance contract will be excluded from promotion exercises at the administration’s discretion.

Students will be required to receive daily check-ins with an assigned school staff member.
After the 5th occurrence of an absence or lateness- the parent and student will have a meeting with the school counselor, Dean, and/or Climate Manager to discuss the ongoing attendance/lateness concerns and be made aware that this student’s tardy/truant behavior has caused him/her to be excluded from ALL 8th-grade trips and PBIS trips.
After the 6th occurrence of an absence or lateness, a meeting with the parent and student to inform them that he/she has been excluded from the 8th-grade promotion ceremony/activities.

School Pride

The students of Finletter are some of the finest in the district and are expected to demonstrate “Eagle Pride” at all times. The Code of Conduct will be used to address infractions and issue consequences.

After the first Level II (suspendable) offense, the following steps will be taken:

According to the code of conduct, the student will be suspended (in or out of school).
The student will be entered into RTII (BHS)
A behavior contract will be developed with the parent/guardian and the student at a meeting. This contract may include daily behavior reports, check-ins with the Climate Manager, Dean of Students, or Counselor, regular parental contact, and community service. The parent and student will sign the behavior contract at the reinstatement meeting. (Failure to sign and adhere to the behavior contract is an automatic exclusion from all 8th grade/P.B.I.S. Trips.)
Students will be placed on a daily report that must be signed by the parent/guardian.
If a second Level II (suspendable) offense occurs, the following steps will be taken:

The student will be suspended according to the code of conduct.

At the reinstatement meeting, the parent and student will be made aware that this student has demonstrated behaviors that have caused him/her to be excluded from ALL 8th-grade trips and PBIS trips.
A warning will be issued that one more infraction against this policy with attendance, lateness, grades, or behavior will result in exclusion from the 8th-grade promotion ceremony/activities.
If a 3rd offense occurs with either attendance, lateness, or a disciplinary infraction, the following steps will be taken:

A meeting with the parent and student to inform them that he/she has been excluded from the 8th-grade promotion ceremony/activities.
At the reinstatement meeting, the parent and student will be made aware that these students have demonstrated behaviors that have caused him/her to be excluded from ALL 8th-grade trips and PBIS trips.

A warning will be issued that one more infraction against this policy with attendance, lateness, grades, or behavior will result in exclusion from the 8th-grade promotion ceremony/activities.
